Home Security?

We live in Australia. You are not allowed to keep weapons for protection. Recently, we have had in our region home invasion with a machete and shotgun. havent you called people. We have an alarm system but can not be used because cats. I am a little scared at times because I think we have enough security, if someone comes with a gun.
